Our Gurus

Swami Tapovan Maharaj

Swami Tapovan Maharaj of Uttarkashi was the “Source” wherefrom Swami Chinmayananda (The Founder of the Chinmaya Movement) acquired the Knowledge of Vedanta (Science of Religion). Swami Tapovan was himself the ideal who had personally understood (through deep study, dispassion and contemplation) the relationship between the biological processes of the body and the human psyche.

In a spirit of deep renunciation, the infinitely gentle poet in him saw Humanity and Nature as one vast “plant, needing only ‘Love’ ” for its highest fulfillment. Intimate communion with Nature (while he walked peaks and valleys of the Himalayas for countless years) gave Swami Tapovan the boundless spiritual reverence.

He revealed Nature’s secrets in his “travelogue” in two Sanskrit masterpieces, Himagiri Viharam and Kailasa Yatra. The masterpiece, without a doubt, is Iswara Darshan, which is his autobiographical “sketch” – it is an absorbing account of a search for the Truth. Its scientific clarity is subtle, because the treatise gives insight into how the saints of the East attain self mastery.

Swami Chinmayananda

Swami Chinmayananda, the founder of Chinmaya Mission, was a renowned Vedantic scholar and spiritual leader. With his vibrant and witty communication style, he taught Hindu philosophy, specifically Vedanta, in its purest form. Born in Kerala, India, in 1916, Swami Chinmayananda initially approached Vedanta as a skeptical journalist, armed with secular knowledge from his academic pursuits. After studying under Swami Sivananda and Swami Tapovanam in the Himalayas, he dedicated his life to sharing the joyful vision of Vedanta with people worldwide.

Swamiji established Sandeepanys, Centers for Learning, in various locations across India. These institutions provide intensive education in scriptural studies and instilled disciplined lifestyles in aspiring students who chose to devote their lives to the study of Vedanta. Graduates, known as Brahmacharis and Brahmacharinis, disseminated the knowledge to seekers globally. Over 200 teachers, trained by Swamiji, taught Vedanta in India and abroad.

Swami Chinmayananda also initiated various social upliftment programs. He founded schools, colleges, Hari Har Schools for underprivileged children, old-age homes, hospitals, clinics, temples, and community outreach programs, exemplifying his commitment to serving society.

Swami Tejomayananda

Swami Tejomayananda, the former Head of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide, succeeded Swami Chinmayananda and embodied devotion in his teachings and actions. His talks, singing, and demeanor reflect his deep spiritual connection. Swamiji is an eloquent and humble teacher who lives by the principles he teaches. His journey began in 1970 when he attended a Geeta discourse by Swami Chinmayananda, leading him to join the Vedanta Course. After serving the cause and training students, he was initiated into Sannyasa in 1983.

Swamiji conducted numerous yajnas, wrote commentaries on Vedanta texts, and translated Gurudev’s writings. He traveled extensively, conducting yajnas, camps, and Vedanta Courses across the United States and Canada. After Swami Chinmayananda’s passing, Swamiji became the Head of Chinmaya Mission, continuing the organization’s vision with great zeal.

Swami Tejomayananda’s contribution expands the reach of Chinmaya Mission, fulfilling its dreams and mission. His commitment to Vedanta and his role as a spiritual leader have left a profound impact on countless individuals worldwide.
